Head Above Water – Fundraising Event at Curraghgour Boat Club Limerick

On the 9th July 2023 we held our Head Above Water gathering for mental health awareness in the Limerick City. We gathered on the banks of the beautiful river Shannon in the Curraghgour Boat Club, where we raised €1,000 for the local charity Limerick Suicide Watch. We had a fun packed morning with our community full of child like play and connection. Thank you to everyone that helped us raise much needed funds for such a worthy cause. My heart was full walking away from the Curraghgour Boat Club that day and man did we get lucky with the weather! ☀️

Jenny from Connect Yoga began the event with warm up yoga on the green. This was followed by a breathwork session from Shell from The Holistic Leaders for those new to cold water therapy followed up by a cold dip in the River Shannon. I can still remember the laughter and activity in the water,  some even shared that this was their first time they have taken a swim in the river. We had a community of all ages on the day which always warms my heart for such events.

After our cold dip Paul from DUO Ireland offered mugs of tea to warm the heart and soul. It wouldn’t be a Wild Folk event without good music! the super talented Brian O Brien shared some of his songs with us on the day. Ali from The Foxes House offered a sharing corner called ‘Open Heart Club”, to rephrase the name of the Beatles album Sgt Peppers ‘Lonely hearts club’. A unique space to gather for 1:1 talks and group discussions for an open honest conversation. This was a big hit and we would love to see Ali create something like this again in the future.

This event would not be possible without the support of Limerick Narwhals as they continue to share their love for the river and the city of Limerick. Mark you’re a champ! Big thanks to Niall from More than A Number who continues to fly the flag for mental health awareness in the city and captured some great drone footage of the day. And big thanks to Mr Wild (Ross) for helping us man the gate.

A massive thank you to the lads of the Curraghgour Boat Club  especially Andrew for their support in opening their gates for this event. We couldn’t think of a more special location, steeped in history for our first community cold dip.

Mind Yourself!
